What to Expect
Before the Sessions
Before the book club begins, you will receive an email one week before the programme starts with information about the book we will be exploring and how much reading is suggested before each session.
You will also receive:
• the session schedule and reading plan
• the online session link
• a printable Mindset Counts Detective Notebook to use during the club
Children do not need to be perfect readers. The aim is simply to come along ready to talk, share ideas and enjoy the story.
During the Session
Each session takes place in a relaxed small-group environment led by me (Tania, a qualified teacher).
Children will:
• recap what has happened in the story
• discuss characters and their decisions
• make predictions about what might happen next
• explore interesting vocabulary and author language choices
• share their ideas and interpretations
• take part in a short creative activity related to the book
Sessions are designed to feel supportive, enjoyable and engaging so that every child feels comfortable contributing.
After Each Session
After the session, children leave with:
• new ideas and perspectives about the story
• increased confidence sharing their thoughts
• curiosity about what might happen next in the story
Occasionally there may be a small optional activity to continue thinking about the story between sessions.
Progress Over Time
As children take part in the book club over time, they begin to:
• build confidence discussing books
• develop deeper comprehension skills
• strengthen vocabulary and language awareness
• practise inference and prediction naturally through discussion
• develop a genuine enjoyment of reading
The focus is not on testing children, but on helping them think more deeply about stories and feel confident sharing their ideas.
Children do not need to be perfect readers. The focus is on discussion, curiosity and enjoying stories together.
